What happens when your trauma was not a single event but a long passage of time? Who do you become when you’re finally free?
I’ve been a book since August, 2022. My first school was Montrose Bay high school which I have returned to multiple times since.
I’m a book because I love storytelling and have faced stigma for a long time for a variety of parts of my identity. I also think it has helped me heal some of my trauma by seeing good come from sharing.
I grew up amongst the rolling hills of Scottsdale in the north-east of Tasmania. I really enjoy when we attend rural schools.
I have a 9 year old rescue dog named Honey. I often tell students that she’s a reflection of me as when I got her she was very naughty and had been re-homed a few times – but with care and patience, I now have a completely different dog.

I can’t single out one experience as I have experienced so much positivity in my years being a book. I think the most rewarding experiences have been when engaging with a group of students who in the beginning are disinterested and rowdy but by the end will come and talk to me about their own experiences of mental health. Being a book has allowed me to reflect more deeply about my own experiences and changed my life.
